The Tree Runner is a spiny, well-camouflaged lizard of Trinidad's forest, almost always found head-down on a large tree trunk, its rough, bark-like scales making it nearly invisible until it moves.
Identification
A medium-sized lizard around 25 to 30 cm total length, with a flattened body, strongly keeled and spiny scales, and mottled brown-grey colouration closely matching tree bark. A crest of enlarged spiny scales runs along the neck and back, and its dorsoventrally flattened shape helps it press tightly against bark.
Behaviour
Spends most of its time clinging head-down on large tree trunks, relying almost entirely on camouflage to avoid detection, and moving in a distinctive spiralling pattern around the trunk to keep the tree between itself and a perceived threat. It forages for insects and other small invertebrates directly on the bark surface, rarely venturing far from its chosen tree.
Status in T&T
Found on large trees in forest across Trinidad, generally in good condition where large, mature trunks remain available. Not considered threatened. It is protected as native wildlife under the Conservation of Wildlife Act.
Threats
- Loss of large, mature trees used as habitat
