Reptile
Yellow-Head Ground Puppy
Helminthophis sp.
The Yellow-Head Ground Puppy is an extremely rare burrowing snake known in Trinidad from a single specimen, making it one of the least documented reptiles in T&T. A member of the blind snake family Typhlopidae (or a related family), it is characterised by a yellowish head contrasting with a darker body. Its presence on the island requires confirmation from additional specimens.
Description
Helminthophis sp. is known from a single collected specimen from Trinidad and the species may not yet have a formal scientific name assigned to the Trinidad population. Like other members of this burrowing snake group, it would be small, cylindrical, and fossorial, spending its life underground and feeding on small invertebrates. The yellowish or pale head that distinguishes it from the Ground Puppy (Leptotyphlops albifrons) is its identifying feature.
Ecology
Given the fragmentary record, almost nothing is known about its ecology in T&T. It is covered by the general protection afforded to all non-venomous snakes under the Conservation of Wildlife Act. Additional fieldwork and specimen collection are needed to characterise this species.
Threats
- Status unknown; single specimen; may represent a genuine rarity or be under-recorded
